It was Manchester United who inflicted City the first defeat of the season and the 4:3 win achieved in the dying moments of the game was the perfect opportunity to revive a fierce rivalry between the two teams from Manchester. The Carling Cup draw wanted the two teams to meet in the competition semi-final and it was a great chance for the Citizens to get revenge on bitter rivals for the aforementioned defeat. Not only did City win the game, but they won it thanks to Carlos Tevez’s brace, with the Argentine showing his former employers what they have been missing. I’ve recently written an article on how poorly the Arab owners have dealt the whole Mark Hughes affair so there is no need repeating myself and I will, therefore, concentrate on the new Manchester City we are likely to see under Roberto Mancini. The games against relegation strugglers Stoke and Wolves are probably not the perfect benchmark and we’ll all need more time to access Mancini’s work but the two games have shown in which direction the Italian will take the Citizens. The wealthy businessmen from the Middle East seem to have found a new hobby as owning a Premiership club looks like the in thing at the moment. The number of Premiership clubs owned by foreigners that has nothing to do with football is increasing every season and that has become a big problem. One could argue they should be allowed to spend their money in whatever way they want, which would be true if their acts weren’t affecting so many people.
